英会話において必須動詞10　
(8) put

putは「物をある場所に設置する」という意味です。「置く」といったら、平面上に置くイメージが強いですが、言わば物の存在場所を決めてくれるのがputです。

■putのイメージを感じてみる例

・He put the key into his pocket.　彼は鍵をポケットに入れた。
→鍵がある場所にをポケットの中にと決めたということです。

・Don't put your head out of the car window.　車窓の外に頭を出さないでください。
→「置く」という動作ではなく、頭の位置について話している。

・Put these data into the computer.　この資料をパソコンに入力してください。

→この場合は物の移動ではなく、情報の移動。input, outputというputの使用法も同じ形で理解できます。

・Put yourself in my place. 私の立場になってみてください。

→「あなたが私のところに立って見てください」と願いしていることですね。これは心理的な移動に該当します。

■putを使った日常会話

A: How much sugar do I put in the punch?

　　パンチを作るのに砂糖はどれくらい入れますか？
B: Read the instructions.

　　説明書を読んでみてください。

A: How did you put the pieces together?

　　どうやってその切れをくっつけましたか？

B: With a strong adhesive.

　　強力接着剤でやりました。

A: Why was the flight postponed?

　　なぜ飛行機が遅延されましたか？

B:  It was put off because of the snow.

　　雪のせいで延期されました。

■putを使う会話パターン

1. Put your room in order.

　　あなたの部屋を片付けなさい。
　　put ~ in order：〜を片付ける、整理する

2. Could you put this sentence into English?

　　この文章を英語に翻訳してくれますか？
　　Put A into B：AをBに翻訳する

3. Put your name, here.

　　ここに名前を記入してください。
　　put：記入する

4. Put the number in parentheses.

　　数字を括弧で包んでください。
　　keep：経営する

5. I'd put him among the top five tennis players in this country.

　　私は彼がこの国でトップ５の中に入るテニス選手だと思います。
　　put：みなす, 捉える

6. He's putting on weight.

　　彼は体重が増えている。

　　put on weight：体重が増える

7. He put on his coat before going out.

　　彼は出かける前にコートを着た。

　　put on：~を着る

8. We had a new air conditioner put in.

　　私たちは新しいエアコンをつけた。

　　put in：つける, 設置する

9. Put all the balls together in a box.

　　ボールを全て集めて箱の中に入れてください。

　　put together：~を集める

10. He put aside the money for the future.

　　彼はその金を将来のために貯蓄した。

　　put aside：貯金する, 〜を備えておく

11. They soon put out the fire.

　　彼らはすぐ火を消した。

　　put out：(火・電気などを)消す

12. We put out a magazine six times a year.

　　私たちは一年に6回雑誌を出版する。
　　put out：〜を公表する, 出版する

13. I put the clock forward by three minutes.

　　私は時計を3分前に戻した。

14. I put down my ideas in the notebook.

　　私は自分の考えをノートに書いておいた。

　　put down：〜を書いておく

15. I cannot put up with the noise any longer.

　　この騒音をもう耐えられない。

　　put up with：我慢する, 耐える
